Penthiopyrad (Fontelis
®
20SC) is a novel fun-
gicide belonging to the chemical family of
carboxamides (FRAC Group 7 - SDHI, Suc-
cinate DeHydrogenase Inhibitors). Penthi-
opyrad controls a broad spectrum of crop
diseases caused by many
Ascomycetes
and
Basidiomycetes
. In Greece, it is currently un-
der registration for the protection of ap-
ple and pear against apple and pear scab,
powdery mildew
and brown spot of pear
.
It
is also under registration for the control of
grey mould on field and greenhouse vege-
tables (tomato, eggplant, pepper, cucumber
and zucchini). High efficacy and its unique
characteristics, (good translaminar pene-
tration and local systemic movement, very
good rainfastness, a favorable toxicological
and eco-toxicological profile) make it high-
ly compatible with Integrated Pest Manage-
ment programmes.

Initium is a new fungicidal active ingredient
developed by BASF. The innovative com-
pound belongs to a new chemical class, the
triazolo-pyrimidylamines. Initium is a mito-
chondrial respiration inhibitor interfering
with the complex III (complex bc1) in the
electron transport chain of the pathogen,
thus ATP synthesis in the fungal cells is in-
hibited. Research has demonstrated that
Initium does not show cross-resistance with
fungicide classes such as Qo inhibitors, phe-
nylamides and carboxylic acid amides. Ini-
tium is highly effective in the inhibition of
zoospore formation and release, zoosporan-
gia release, motility and germination. In nu-
merous field trials carried out worldwide,
Initium has been shown to be highly selec-
tive in a wide range of specialty crops and
providest the best performance when ap-
plied as a protectant spray before disease is
established in the crop. Initium applications
should begin before infection of the target
diseases, on a preventive scheme, or when
ambient conditions are conducive for the
disease and the crop is at a sensitive stage.
Initium controls all major oomycete diseas-
es, e.g. downy mildew caused by
Plasmo-
para viticola
in grapes, late blight caused by
Phytophthora infestans
in potatoes and to-
matoes, and a broad range of downy mil-
dews and late blights in vegetables (e.g. cu-
curbits, onions, and lettuce).
In Greece, Initium was tested in replicated
field trials in ready mix products with either
dimethomorph or metiram during the 2006-
2012 growing seasons and showed high ef-
fectiveness compared to standard fungi-
cides.
The performance features of Initium in
terms of biological efficacy, selectivity and
environmental safety, will contribute signif-
icantly to crop protection, and support in-
tegrated production of high quality agricul-
tural products.
